When considering today’s building permit applications for non-residential buildings in Belgium, only offices and schools are currently subject to primary energy requirements. Other specific non-residential building types (the so called ASB) are not covered by primary energy requirements yet. This will change soon, for all non-residential buildings with permit applications later than January 1st, 2017 will be subject to EPB requirements. All non-residential building types will have to reach a given energy performance level through the concept of “EPN-unit”.
In case an EPN-unit includes several functional parts (offices, kitchen, health care, etc.), the EPB requirement for that EPN-unit will be determined in function of the available floor surface of every functional part.
As active partner of the EPB-consortium, 3E is working together with universities and BBRI to improve the EPB calculation method further. Besides the development of improved algorithms to assess monthly output of solar thermal and solar PV systems, 3E was also involved in the development of the new EPN calculation methodology.
In Flanders, the Flemish Energy Agency (VEA) recently commissioned 3E for developing the EPN course and examination schemes for EPB advisors, together with Thomas More Institute, Bauphi and BBRI. The EPN course will elaborate i.e. on the principles of the new division into functional parts and the changes with respect to the EPU calculation methodology. It will address the impact of the net energy demand calculation for domestic hot water, the amount of renewable energy produced, the energy consumption for lighting, etc. This will be supported by examples & cases studies throughout the course.
