The city of Ghent acquired the former docksides near the Dampoort railway station in view of redevelopment. 3E was contracted by the city to contribute to the site masterplan for the site reconversion, being developed by OMA, an urban planners’ office. The site itself covers about 45 hectares (of which 15 are water) and is intended mostly for housing developments. 3E focused on developing a complete set of ambitious sustainability measures that can be applied for the site at different levels: policy measures, measures for design and realization, and measures for future usage by residents and site neighbours. Integrating a large body of water and a considerable amount of open green space, the site can offer some specific and appealing opportunities for high quality living space at the heart of the city. 3E also advised the planners on the integration of renewable energy, including the possibility of a suntrackers in the docks and ice-water storage for building cooling. A more efficient dock water pipe network should also be installed to save on drinking water.
